I wouldn't open the south hand unless I agreed to open quite light. The suits are very poor. The 2H and 2S bids are clear.

North thinks that the 2S rebid shows 6. This does not in SAYC and also not for a majority of 2/1 players.

Hi,

assuming you play a system a la SAYC,
the only bid, which is worth discussing,
is 4S.

As was already stated North believed that
2S shows 6, South did not - a matter of
partnership agreement.

Playing with a pickup partner, I would always
assume that 2S can bid bid on a 5 card suit,
so North should bid 3NT.

I think 3NT may have better chances notwithstanding a 6-2 ♠ fit also, maybe we can make on the other 3 suits. And of course, as P_Marlowe suggests, it's just way too risky to assume 6 spades with no prior discussion.

North obviously thought the 2♠ rebid promised six spades.

Playing 2/1, North had an easy 2NT bid over 2S.

Not playing 2/1 North actually has a slightly tough call and I don't think 4S is that silly, although 3NT would be more normal.

(I'm also not wild on South's opening bid)

Let's face it, we would all open the hand. Those who say they won't do it nevertheless at the table. I prefer a slightly off-shape 2NT rebid rather than 2♠ although that should not promise more than five.

As responder I would choose 3NT as my next call no matter what opener's rebid is in this context.

1♠ is a pain in opponents' buttocks, so it pays to open this ugly duckling I think. I'd open it with 1♥ also with majors reversed but somewhat more reluctantly.

I would open 1S. Based on the discussion initiated by Hannie?? some weeks ago, Nth has a 2NT bid over 2S. 3NT would show 15-16. No, 2S does not show 6.

For me the responder has a 2NT bid after 2S, assuming a 2/1 gf has already been put in place. I fail to see why players feel this rebid of 2S shows 6 rahter than "this is my best choice" rebid.

I’m surprised the opening has created any discussion, ratty spades, no great hand but I can’t imagine passing, the 2♠ rebid says it all.
Anyway thanks for the responses, this has helped sort out a long-standing disagreement.

I passed a hand with 12 hcp and a 5 card spade suit once.

I was 4th hand, it was late, we weren't winning anyways...
