1. Maybe it's more obvious than I thought, but how would you handle such a hand?

AQJ9x
xx
KQJ9x
x

Both Vul, IMPs

1 - (2) - P - (3)
?

2. What if we changed it to:

AKJ9x
xx
AKJx
xx

An insufficient Michaels 3?
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Rather than let this thread die of passers, I should have asked:

3. If you pass, what more would you need to act (same shape) and what would your call be?

If I had like, the king of spades or ace of cubs I would bid 4D on hand 1. If I had like..the CK I would double on hand 2.

1) I double.

2) Pass. Need one more diamond to double.

Pass both times. I would want to be 6-5 and/or have a 4- loser hand.

I'm passing both.

On the first I'd rebid 4 if you added the K or an ace, or if i had 6-5 and the same honours.

On the second I'd double if you gave me a top club honour instead of one small heart, maybe even with the K instead of a small one.
Kind regards,
Harald

Ok, so let's try to run the gambit. Which hands are you bidding 4 with?

(a) AQJTx xx AQJTx x
(b ) AKJxx xx AKTxx x
(c ) AKQxx xx AKxxx x
(d) AQJxxx x KQT9x x
(e) KQJxxx x KQJxx x
(f) AKxxxx x AKxxx x

Which hands are you doubling (or making some call other than pass) with?

(g) AKJxx xx AKQx xx
(h) AKQxx xx AKQx xx
(i) AKJxx xx AKJx Kx
(j) AQxxx x AQxx KJx
(k) KJxxx x AQTx KQx
(l) KQJTx xxx AKQx A

The timidity of youth or the temerity of age?
  • 4 = 10, _X = 9, _P = 8
  • _X = 10, _P = 9, 4 = 4

I'm passing (a) and (b ) and bidding 4 with (c ), (d), (e) and (f).

I'm passing with (g), (i) (j) (k) and (l) and doubling with (h). Only (g) is a clearcut pass IMO, the others are close.
Kind regards,

In the second list, I would double with both hands that have a singleton heart. Otherwise I think I agree.

Conservative guys.
I'm bidding on all of them, except I might be talked into a pass with g. If we get too high, for sure it won't be either the first or the last time.

With the 6-5 hands, aren't any of these 3 spade calls?

Again you agree with me. (Well almost, nobody will talk me into a pass.)

Edit: Actually on e) and maybe d), I would bid 4
