Scoring: MP

..P....P...1..2
..P....P..X(1)..P
..P..3...P..3NT
..P....P...P

(1) asked by West and explained as "penalties"

Result: 3NT (W) -2, NS +100

EW queried the penalty double of 2 at the end of the hand. The TD asked South if he agreed with the description, and he said he did. The TD further asked if he expected his partner to pass his double most of the time, and he again said he did.

EW maintained they would not have bid on over 2X had they known South could have had such a hand.
--------------------------------------
Part 2

I could have made this ruling number 9, but I don't want to risk boring you any more. This is what happened at another table where a TD was called, just to show you there is more than one route to 3NT:

..P...2..X(1)..2NT(2)
..P...3...X.....3
..P.....P....X....P
3....P...3NT...P
..P.....P

(1) God knows
(2) Alerted and explained as Lebensohl (!)

I have no idea what the rest of the auction meant, how many it went off, nor who put in a claim for what damage. I think we decided they were all beyond the help of the directing staff.

2 is going off; where is the damage?

And it will probably go down more than two...

Anyway, what was 2 -- intermediate? Why would East pull a penalty double?

No matter if the double was penalty or takeout, N/S had decided that 2 will probably not make. So the explanation should not matter for East's decision whether to run or not. If I was east, I would have been more scared by a takeout double than by a penalty double, but I would pass in any event.

Nothing directly to do with the above hand, except the meaning of doubles bit: over the same weekend someone doubled one of my 1 openings. Partner, who was obviously getting suspicious asked the meaning of the double and was told "Takeout, of course".

When I came to play the hand I discovered the doubler had a doubleton spade. I stupidly failed to play him for a singleton heart and went off in something! :D

Someone needs to nail south for taking advantage of UI. He has a completely obvious double of 3h and 3n.

While true that they are obvious, the UI does not seem to suggest not doubling.

As Campboy said, 2 is going off, so we ruled there was no damage.
