I used to open these hands, now I grit my teeth, pass and hate it.

I thought I was a more conservative opening bidder than most but I would always open this. Unsupported jacks aren't great but the 5422 shape including AKQxx makes up for it.

Open 1 because the Oracle reveals that the hand is worth exactly 12.20 points.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I can't imagine 2H with this hand in second seat. Certainly its an agreement thing, but with 3 quick tricks and 2 hearts, I'm bidding 4H if I'm your partner. At least if I open 1H we'll get to the much better 3NT contract.

3rd seat, I agree with 2H

My experience with this type hand (near opener with good H) is
partner takes me for real and too high.
First into the auction when our H-fit
verses their S-fit seems to get
LHO eager to 1S overcall -- outbid anyway.
I've put this type into reopening.
No problem responding to partner:
2H>1C(5xH-good, 4-fit), 1H>1D, 2H>1S, H-xfer then 3NT to 1NT.

1 or 2, with no particular preference. Certainly 2 in 3rd seat.

2 is horrible. What happened to the idea that second-seat preempts should be pure?

It was replaced by the idea that preempts are judgement bids, to be made when the situation calls for it.

In this particular case you normally pick 1, but if one of the opps looks like he's aching to bid, 2 is definitely more adequate :)

I can live with 1 or pass (playing decent openings). 2 is asking for trouble.

what a nice 1 opener. 11 points, not 5332, great suit.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

If you have an agreement to open any 11 then 1. The problem is not this hand it is the system required to handle weak opening like this and the discipline required to stay in system. Consequently this is an auto pass for me with any pickup and anyone who insists on 2/1.

this is not any 11. it's not:

Ax
KQxxx
Jxx
Jxx

(even though I suppose the above is also slightly better than a random 11)

I would pass both the original hand and Csaba's hand. In 3rd seat I can see a weak two, but partner expects more defense.

any 11 means

QJx
QJx
QJx
Qxxx

qualifies. The test is to stay out of trouble when you have to open this and partner has crapola
