Maybe you don't think the players MrAce asked are any good?
Also note that had he guessed the S correctly, (extremely unlikely of course), 4S is on ice.

Of course they are good, that's why they were asked!

4 doesn't make by the way, guess or no guess.

I'd also like to add that if south had Kxx of spades instead of Jxx then you'd make 4H.

I'd think that partner should act with Kxx and Jx.

FWIW all posters seem to think th e65 hand is the crucial hand..

I strongly diaagree........opener just needs to show extra and let responer bid.

I think the key bid is by responder not opener.

If one h and then 2h shows extras ok.

Stiff heart lead beats 4 trivially.

By south I meant the doubler, not partner.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I think responder's actual hand is a clearcut 3 bid. Q and J are really good cards.

With the hand that Cherdano thought Han was talking about, Kxx Jx in the majors, I'd be thinking about bidding game. Game isn't cold opposite that - it's off on any 4-1 spade break, mainly because opener's spades are so bad. On that sort of layout, the trump switch shouldn't be hard to find against 4.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Are there? Speaking for myself, there aren't any hands with 5-5 in the majors that I'd open 1, and it's hard to think of a 4-5 hand that would bid 2 rather than double.

I've now taken to opening 5-5s that are so good I'm bidding game if partner speaks with 1 with a lot of success (on a small sample size), although I might not do so R/W. In the unopposed auction 1-1N-2-?-3 you seem to be better off than you are after 1-1N-3 where you haven't shown 5-5, but if opps interfere as they're likely to do W/R you can be worse off.
