EBU

What is the ruling regarding the use of a foreign language at the bridge table? I believe that the official language of bridge is English, however, provision is quite rightly given to players to speak in their own language at certain times. Can you tell me when those times are legal?

I do not know the official regulation, but in practice foreign languages are permitted all the time except for when players have cards in their hands.

The EBU WB, at 163.1, says "Conversation between players or between an NPC and his players, during the period of a playing session, shall be in English". The section is headed "Guidance for Non-Playing Captains", but the chapter is headed "EBU Regulations in General Use", so it's unclear whether this could be applied to pairs as well as teams. I can find no other reference to the subject in either the WB or the OB.

I wonder if the ACBL has a regulation on this? :o

There's nothing in the Laws about it.

Certainly in practice at EBU congresses I've been told to rule that they must only speak in English during the hand, but we don't care otherwise. I had a pair speaking in French during the hand because one member could only speak broken English and the other was (we hope) translating, oppo called me over because they were (rightly) upset by this (and also because they had no system cards and couldn't explain the calls in English either).
