All white, your partner opens 2nd hand with 1NT (15-17), you hold:

I would Texas. If we have a slam, then that would be unlucky.

4-->4 for me. I have way too much to invite, and not enough for 2-->2; 4.

at IMP:
2, if pard 2 then 3, if any bid showing 4-cards 4

at matchpoint:
full game, depending on system 2 and raise, or 4

transfer to and raise to 3 seems like a WTP solution. probably a close decision for these colors at IMPS

I don't bid 3NT if that's what you're asking. I am forcing to game in hearts, with texas or whatever methods you use.

texas at imps, jacoby and invite (3) at mps. Like pluses too much to force to game at mps. Like games too much to invite at imps, even nv.

Texas and pass.

Texas also at all forms of scoring. I suspect a sim will show 4 is a big favorite.

You may be right, but surely the question isn't whether 4 is a big favourite opposite a 15-17 1N....it is whether it is a favourite opposite hands on which opener would reject an invitational sequence showing 6+ hearts?

I suspect that this question would be far closer. I'm not saying that the answer wouldn't still favour bidding....I don't know and it is difficult to simulate since, especially knowing what dummy holds, we will have trouble being objective in deciding go/no go hands.

I assumed this was why the hand was posted.

I say this with all due respect mike and richard, I think you've lost your minds inviting with this hand! 3N needs very little from a 1N opener.

The problem with standard methods is they don't deal with this hand (6322 choice of games) very well. And those hands come in two types. One is 6 weakish hearts with extras and scattered values. 3N will often be better, but you can transfer and bid 3N reasonably effectively with that since there is a correlation in wanting to play in hearts opposite 3, but not opposite 2 (but still it's not great). The other is something like AQ(j)xxx or KQ(J)xxx of hearts, where you might have 9 rippers and 4 losers.

I think if you are looking to beef up your NT system adding in a way to handle this hand type is really good, I play 2D then 3D as showing 2 of the top honors 6th, inv+ currently so partner can bid 3N if that looks correct with much more confidence.

I think just going 1N-3N is a pretty reasonable shot with this hand, albeit high variance. I think transfer then 3N is not all that reasonable because one of the main times you would want to play hearts is when partner has 2 small hearts. Though if your partner will pass it with all 4333s then it's probably ok, you get to 4H opposite 3 hearts and a doubleton (good) or 4 hearts (might be bad but whatever). So if you can show basically 5332 choice of games that is probably good.

When I look at this hand I do think "notrump" though.

I would Texas but I'm curious to see (haven't read past opening post yet) whether Jacoby followed by 3N gets much support from the aristocracy. I don't think it will but I've been wrong before.

I would either bid 3NT (when I'm in a gambling mood) or transfer+invite in (the normal action). I don't like 4 texas here.

3NT is the gambler's bid. I don't see much technical merit to it.

Game, on the other hand, should be bid. Thus get pard to play 4, as it should be best from his side of the table.

Jacoby followed by 3NT won't get much support for the reason Justin has already given: whether 4H or 3NT is better won't depend on partner's heart length, in fact you are more likely to be better in hearts when partner has a doubleton.
At matchpoints that's actually a good reason to transfer then bid 3H, invitational with 6 hearts, because partner can bid 3NT over it.

I also don't think a simulation will help: my experience on these hands is that even when you know what partner has, it's often not clear which game is better.
