Partner, dealer, opens 1:

1 p 1 2
? 2 ? p
?

(2 was not alerted... but "clearly" (?,we ourselves play it natural) a T/O for the majors; at the table it was a 45 hand)

We play BBOAdv 2/1(best minor) with following specific agreements:

Support doubles and redoubles: After a major-suit one-level response and a sandwich double overcall below two of responder's suit, opener's redouble or double (even of a natural or artificial one notrump) shows a three-card fit for responder's suit. After a one-diamond response, opener's double of a sandwich one-spade overcall shows four hearts.

and on bi-coloured overcalls we have some "Unusual over Unusual" agreements:
-A double will usually show interest in penalising your opponent, with good defence to at least one of their suits.
-When both their suits are known: the cheapest cue-bid (actual or virtual) is a game-invitational or stronger raise; the second-cheapest cue-bid is a one-round force with the remaining suit.
-A pass & double : Saying I want to compete somewhere or you can convert with their suit as I have some values. (=Cooperative Double)

Looking for your advice on this situation. Lots of questions:
- What is/should be, a direct double by Opener ?
- What is/should be, a direct double by Responder ?
- What is/should be, a belated double by Opener ?
- do we need to change our agreements ? Or to be more specific ?

Your answers, if needed, can be modulated according to the exact meaning of the 2Dbid.
Many thanks for your help.

1- What is/should be, a direct double by Opener ?
2- What is/should be, a direct double by Responder ?
3- What is/should be, a belated double by Opener ?
4- do we need to change our agreements ? Or to be more specific ?

If 2D = majors:
1. All of the following are IMO sensible meanings for dbl: penalty of the majors, lead directing, diamond support.
2. That is related to 1, but lacking any agreement I'd say penalty.
3. Probably something like 5C and 3D and good 13 to 14 hcp.
4. Yes. You need to have meta-rules for doubles, whatever they might be.

Many people play 2D as natural. In that case
1. Take-out
2. Take-out
3. Either penalty or as 3 above.
4. Probably not.

tough isn't it.

Yes, worthwhile structuring your replies.
