Matchpoints, We are NV, they are VUL, opponents are unknown. We play a pretty normal 2/1.

In situations like this, I find it much easier to pass when partner still has a call coming.

I wouldn't consider anything but pass. You have no idea even if it's our hand or what strain we might play in or at what level. It's hard to play 3NT or 3Hx when you bid 4C. Maybe defending 3H undoubled is right.

Furthermore xxx in H is the worst holding we can have and is another reason why bidding 4C is bad.

The question is what hands will partner pass when you'd want him to bid ? Axxx, Kxx, xxx, Kxx ? There are a lot of hands with 3 hearts and this sort of point count where partner can't bid again Qxxx, Axx, Jx, Kxxx where 5♣ is good and 3N will probably make.

I think it's close P/ToX, nothing else appeals. NV/V I might well double.

If you think partner reopens on those hands, consider how they play opposite the 3343 12 count you could easily hold on this sequence

Those are the conditions given.

Our double is defined as very short in Partner's response suit, extra strength, and no suit of the appropriate length for a bid in that suit. It warns partner off rebidding his response suit. Is that called takeout? informative? action? I don't know what to call it but it looks like what I have.

It's called penalty oriented and it looks bad.

I voted for double but I misread the auction, thinking partner had bid 1H and the opponents 3S. In that case we have a perfect (takeout!) double. On the actual auction we have a normal pass.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

It doesn't look pretty, for sure. But considering I might have a rather normal 3-3-4-3 12 count for a pass, at least it warns partner against rebalancing with a pressure 3S bid when that is wrong. And I do have a few quick tricks with a good possibility that defending will be more profitable than declaring. If pard does bid 3S, it will be in the full knowledge of my lack of support and my extra strength, so I don't have to worry about that.

Partner could pull double to the right spot with certain minor suit lengths if double describes this. It would be nice to have a heart card, but oh, well.

Double, have to show we've a decent hand. Unfortunate that with us having three hearts partner is unlikely to be able to have a penalty pass though.
