Partner would open with unbalanced hands with 10 points or balanced hands with 12 points. You can bid 2 to show a single suit with spades. Do you playing IMPs in a good field?

Against weak opps I would bid since they might not know how they bid over interference. But against strong opps I don't think bidding has much upside at this vulnerability at IMPs. OK, we could gain when LHO has some invitational hand that becomes awkward. But the downside of bidding is obvious.

I would bid 2, but maybe I'm not used to playing good opppsition.

And I disagree that pass is clearly better than pass.

No way! Pass is marginally better than pass! I'd stake my life on it.

I'm tempted to bid 2 which is a transfer in our system.

Over that pard can pass with 6 of them and spade shortness or 5 if it's doubled.

That said, I am only tempted and agree with the rest that it's a very swinging action and the downside is larger than the upside.

pass is clearly better than PASS. My pard is a balancing machine should it go pass back to them but we don't open as aggressively as the op states..

At matchpoints I would have said 2S was a standout.

At imps the upside is small and the downside is large. I would consider pass a good tactical action, on a hand otherwise worth 2S.

It really is quite close. It is easy to see how one position or the other could turn out poorly. At the table I would bid 2 because that's the style I've always played by. They say it's a bidder's game, don't they?

If we had that, and it was matchpoints, maybe that would be enough "outs" to waltz in there at these colors. We have had a lot of success against pairs who like to disturb our NT.

DONT in the hands of a good pair who use judgement instead of just doing something every time is powerful as a weapon, however. That is off-topic, and I don't believe doing something with this hand would be a good idea.

By the way, I would pass. Lots of reasons:

- If they end up in 3N, I'd rather them not to know about the spade problem.

- If they end up in 4 (not unlikely), I like my defensive chances, and I certainly don't want partner thinking 4 is making or its a -200 save.

- We could go for a nasty number. Even if they pass out 2, its probably because they are both 3-3, so 200 looms (assuming MPs).

- Even at MPs, what are we trying to gain? We have 8, our RHO has 15. We need to catch partner with a good hand and a fit for this to make, assuming we are trying for +110 against +100 defending.

It's hand like these that produce -800.
Iffy suit, minimal values, a passed partner and red vs white.
How many warnigs do you need to pass?

I would pass this hand in direct seat, but bid in balancing seat after 2 passes.
I would bid in direct seat with A109652 K1084 J 96 <-- One loser fewer, and 2 is my call...
