I won't claim that pass was correct, but it should not have been such a disaster.
After N passes, the obvious choice for lead should be ♦A and another.
If the lead of a ♠honor is just too attractive, then at least shift to diamonds at trick 2 when you see the obvious club ruff situation.

I agree that this is not a particularly comfortable hand to handle over partner's take-out double, but that is a really poor excuse for passing when you have nothing like the right sort of hand for this.

Agreed. I'd rather fudge a 1NT bid or something silly like that than pass. I think 2D has to be the choice, South bids 2S but what happens next? Perhaps 3D (ask stop)-3NT, which looks to be the top spot?

North has a pretty clear 1NT response imo. The honours are not pulling their full weight, so you are not missing anything opposite a hand that will pass 1NT. I can't see any case whatsoever for 2♦ other than to prove we counted our points.
Sure, we doubtless make 3NT+1 on a club lead, but that is fortuitous.

I agree about the SJ, but how is AKx and QJT not pulling full weight? 1NT is an underbid and, worse, it advertises a stopper where we only have a wonderful holding of 7xxx. And perhaps this is resulting a little - it's not clear 3NT will always be bid - but over 1NT South has no reason to bid on; with 3NT making on any lead that's an instant 10 out.

1NT is the normal bid, not a great stopper, but the alternatives are much worse, 2NT is laughable, pass is too commital and the other really decent alternative I consider is to bid 1♥.

North has an easy 1NT bid imo, you can't always have a stopper but that doesn't mean you have to start bidding 3 card Majors or passing with a super max.
