Love all, IMPs, longish match.

What do people think about 4?

It might work.

It's a bit (read: a lot) anti-partnership though.

Sure, 4 might work. So might 6. But not usually.

I prefer 1 by a large margin.

Why is this in expert forum?

1 for me, I may open 4 if I feel we are behind and need some action.

Because I wanted to ask the opinion of "experts".

Apparently (according to mods, mgoetze and others) this is not the point of the expert forum - I have had topics of mine moved because they were not 'expert' enough (despite the people moving them professing not to be experts themselves and acknowledged experts admitting to being unsure of the answers).

Don't ask me what the point of the forum is though, because I haven't really received a satisfactory answer on this yet and the forum description is inconsistent with what actually gets posted here.

Apparently an acceptable answer you might have given would be "because I am an expert".

Sorry for the derail. I like 4H first/3rd in.

At the beginning of a longish match, 4 would put them on notice. Not sure what the message would be, or whether "them" is 2,or 3 people --maybe more if there is a captain in charge of future lineups.

I think 4 is fine.

Similar to a hand that Gold had in the 2008 Olympiad final that is included in the interesting Pavlicek article (http://rpbridge.net/9x16.htm).

You can, and usually will, get experts replying to questions/topics in other subforums.

Technically I suppose I should not post in this forum at all. Often, I click an interesting-sounding topic on the new content list, add a reply, and only later realize what forum it is in.

I think 4 is wrong because the hearts aren't good enough, and also because this heart holding is good opposite a singleton heart and some diamond length.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

That was x AKJ10xx KQ109x x in third seat. I don't think that's particularly similar.

Sure it could work, but so often when I "operate" like this with 4 I end up apologizing to PD. My 6 card suit isn't really good enough for 4. I'll just open 1.

Don't like 4. It could work, but there are a lot of things that could go wrong. Aside from the nightmare of running into a heart stack on your left when your side has a good diamond fit, you could miss a slam, a better game, or a paying sacrifice in diamonds if the opps bid 4 or 5. Further, partner might take a phantom not knowing that his KQ(x) of hearts is worth two tricks.

This is the kind of action that I would expect from someone who considers his team to be a heavy underdog in the match.

Opening 4M on such hands is an underrated strategy on bbf imo. This isn't the right suit for it though.

Even allowing much leeway when missing the other Major (thus likely to beat their score),
this suit is too weak, A +KQ less fear of 4S, some chance 5D,6D,7D is on and missed.
I'm fully aware that 1H .. (4S) before my rebid, when I guess 5D is my bid -- hating that.
I won't risk a likely 4H disaster to keep them from the same 4S my teammates find -- that's the big taming.

Thanks for the replies people. Nice link to the article on 4H openings against 1H openings.

I just wondered what people thought generally...I opened 1H and my counterpart in the other room opened 4, which gained a swing on this occasion when we had this layout.

We actually played a spade part score the other way.

Be careful to avoid resulting. If they manage to double 4, it looks like -800.

Yes I can appreciate that....looks like they'd do very well to make 6 tricks to be honest

I merely posted the hand for people's interest :)

I don't like it. Defense, 2nd suit to play in, just 6 cards.

Nothing.

4H is certainly an option in 3rd seat, but not in 1st or 2nd.
You have a nice hand, opening bid, with an eays rebid.
You are at the beginning of the match, why do you want to try for
a swing board at the beginning.

With kind regards
