While Alerts are generally noted in red on the convention card and Announcements in blue, refer to the ACBL Alert Chart and/or procedure for complete information.

I have always considered charts and graphs to be visual aids in support of the real thing, and have always recognized that they might not be perfect restatements.

It would never occur to me to take something in a chart over the source material if there seems to be a conflict, or to even consider something on a chart but not in the source to be valid sans separate reference to another source.

I felt the same until I discovered, as I mentioned upthread, that the ACBL considers the procedure to be subordinate or supplemental to the chart.

Plus the alert chart isn't really a chart.

Actually, you said you thought you recalled something to that effect, after which I said I hoped your recollection was wrong.

And that is relevant how?

I sent an email to "rulings" asking "If the Alert Chart and the Alert Procedure differ in some particular, which governs?' This was the reply I just got: "If there is a specific bid you are referring to I'd like to know. Otherwise it's very difficult to answer your question. And if there is a difference then we need to be aware of it."

I've responded to the above. I will report back when I get an answer, probably Monday. If you want the text of my response, let me know, and I'll post it here with the answer (it's pretty long).

Well, they haven't updated either one to reflect the Puppet Stayman issue, so I don't hold out much hope for clarification on which one prevails, either.

I noticed in some Minutes, they use the two interchangably or just use "chart" when they mean both (fewer syllables).

I don't anticipate a straight answer either, since getting those seems to be almost impossible.

And so far I've got no answer at all.
