it's not pleasent but I don't really see what choice we have apart from 1 spade

Why isn't it pleasant? We'd bid 1 also with Kxxx instead of AKQJ in clubs, this way it's a lot more pleasant :)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

It is "automatic WTP" but still "not pleasant."

Not a WTP for me, minus J I would certainly overcall 1N, my worry is that this may be a touch good.

I probably have to bid 1 but don't like it much.

I suspect 1N would be right at MPs, but I'd bid 1S.

I also would wonder between 1 and 1 NT.

This boils down to partner's spade support. If partner has as little as KQx, 4S is virtually laydown. But if partner ends up taking a preference on xx, a spade part score is almost certainly wrong.

I bid 1S, but not massively enjoying it.

Thanks for your input. To probably no one's surprise (since I created the thread) this was a GIB hand. I was surprised by GIB's choice of double, and I wanted to see what others thought. Truth be known, I'd have leaned to 1NT, depending on the time of day, amount of wine, choice of partner, etc.

I think there are many differences between human and robot.
Gib should be a largely mechanical process with mode of loyal
Human should be logical thinking with wise judgment.
So there are differences between approach and result.

There are a number of humans for whom 17 points is too many for a simple overcall so they'd double too as the singleton would stop them overcalling 1N.

Double is not crazy but I am not thrilled by the idea of bidding 2s after partners 2d response. Even worse, if they redouble, p may preempt in diamonds.

1S is also not great if hearts get raised. It may be wisest not to reopen then but it's a bit difficult to shut up with such a strong hand.

1nt I like to play sound so this hand is not too strong and if we play system on p is not so likely to tale us to diamonds.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

1nt is foul. this is a terrible hand for playing in no trumps. there's the obvious paucity of diamond cards, but the stiff akqj blocks the clubs even if partner has a fit and coupled with the singleton diamond it means partner's hand is probably dead unless he has something in spades, in which case we might as well bid them. even if partner has the diamonds stacked, we'll need to build at least 1 trick in spades just to make 1NT.

xxxx xxx xxxxx x in partner's hand makes 1nt -1 with 4 spades only requiring a 2-2 trump break.

opening and, it seems, overcalling 1NT off-shape has gone too far imo. we should be trying to bid our hands as naturally as possible. you should only be fibbing about your shape and bidding no-trumps to dodge a problem you forsee arising: opening 1NT with 24(52) because you don't have enough to reverse, opening 1NT with 6 card minor because your hand's too good to rebid 2m and too bad to rebid 3m and so on. here we don't have a problem. if partner raises spades, it's very likely because we want to play in er...spades. it's much easier to get from spades to no-trumps or indeed clubs than it is to get from no-trumps to a 5-3 spade fit and almost any club fit.

I think you are right. Playing with GIB a lot lately created bad behaviours on me.
