I posted this in the advanced forum, but i guess that was the wrong place, since the only answer i got was not a very informative one.

Here is my question.

You open a 15-17 1NT whit this hand:

♠ KO6
♥AK654
♦94
♣K103

all pass en dummy comes:

♠AJ92
♥ J9
♦ Q1085
♣ 975

LHO leads a small ♠ and you use the K from the hand.

How do you play the♥suit?

If you play a small ♥ to dummys J9 and LHO plays small in tempo, do you play the J or the 9? whats the best odds?

thanks

lol the answer you got was reasonable and informative
Personally I think inserting 9 hearts if they play low is percentage
"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

yes the answer was very reasonable, but not so informative imo
What I'm asking is why would you choose to play the 9 or the J? and can anyone tell me what the best calculated line is? what line gives most +EV in the long run?

Sorry if i sounded like it was a bad answer, it wasn't, but i only got 1, and hoped for a few more opinions.

Cheers

At trick 2, I'd lead the "Curse of Scotland" (9). If I were to lead a , instead, and the defender played low in tempo, then I'd finesse 9, .

Can you tell me why you play the 9 and not the J?

On the table LHO had 10x and RHO had Q87x, i played a !H to the 9 when LHO played small to, and won 9 tricks

But I'm wondering if thats the best % play?

If the suit is 3-3, it doesn't matter what you play
If the suit is 4-2 with length on your left, the 9 gains against Qx on your right, the J against 10x (symmetrical)
If the suit is 4-2 with length on your right, the 9 gains against 10x on your left, the Jack against Qx (symmetrical)

However many people would not be capable (or at least would be less likely) to duck with Qx, while ducking with 10x is easy, which makes the 9 look better

Against that, if you do play low to the 9 and queen and a spade comes back you have horrible entry problems. How do you unblock hearts and cash all your spades?

But in 1NT at IMPs I would also play on diamonds not hearts. Even possibly at matchpoints.

Playing a heart could easily develop a seventh loser. Playing a diamond will probably succeed even if the jack is offside, as you will be unlucky to lose four clubs and three diamonds. You have a sure trick in diamonds in due course. I think Frances is right.

After x!h -> x!h, there are for hands types possible:

1. D(x), 2. 10(x), 3. (x), 4. D10(x)

In 1, playing 9!h loses.
In 2, playing 9!h gains.
In 3, it makes no difference.
In 4, it makes no difference.
D10x - no difference
D10xx - no difference
D10xxx - no difference

Yes, this is 50/50. Play whatever. Or read from the face of opponent. :)

You can clearly estabilish a diamond loser by force, and it doesnt give the opponents any tricks which they cannot get anyway. Whereas heart gives them a trick before it creates a trick for you.
