The bid of 3D has to go down as one of the worst bids I have seen gib make.
By far.

Sorry, while bizarre unfortunately isn't close to worst call. If Gib ruffs opening should make 3♦.
Weve seen Gib pass an unusual 4N, cuebids. Let opponent play 4M when 7m is cold. The list is long.

This bid seems to be a bug in hand evaluation.
Surely being at the 3 level at a possibly 4-3 fit can't be better
than allowing opps play 2S.
passing cuebids and unusual 4N seem to be straight out logic bugs.

Yes, bidding 3♦ bizarre even if cheating and knows p has 5♦.

Sadly, this doesn't rate an honorable mention in the list of worst GIB bids.

I've seen much worse. At least it didn't jump to a grand slam because its 3NT got doubled or that kind of bad bid. In fact, if it only ended up down 1 when NV vs VUL undoubled at level 3, then it didn't even end up doing that bad.
Also, consider this. If it has 5 spades and the other team has a fit, it can tell that its partner has none. So not only can its partner ruff those but it also has more cards in more of the other suits.
I still wouldn't recommend bidding this but it's not that bad.

If it is possible to do "not so badly" at 3D, I wonder what it is doing to 2S ?
