cases where GIBBO prefers NT in my experience:
1. Good d stopper maybe KTx, AQx, QJxx, weak trumps, lower HCP to name a few
2. I know I opened light but is not what I am discussing
3. Yes, 3H shows 4 and I should have again in retrospect. Did not want to give away the distribution.

BUT Qx ? Really?

This somehow escaped everyone's attention. Trying to re-post or get to top of list.

Basic GIB passes, doesn't bid 3NT. Advanced GIB was gambling that 3NT would work out better in the long run. Nothing wrong with that.

hmmm .... I wonder under what assumption it works better in the long run. Of course, if it works better in the long run under the assumption that W will always pass, then fair enough. But if W is supposed to correct to 4 with the actual hand, then I don't think it is good to bid 3NT.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Well Helene. I gave the matter some thought. There is a fuzzy weird warped logic for trying 3 NT. Partner is limited. 2 of 12 hcp are the dQ. So if one has to bid game after the bidding it seems like a shot at 3NT is not bad. pd may have jxx, Txxx, Ax(x) etc. Or the d bidder may duck to keep communication. So GIBBO takes a chance.

Sorry you might disagree, but I don't think this is 'bad' enough to bother fixing. I wouldn't bid 3NT but it could easily be right - just give partner a minimum with diamond help and there are 4 tricks to lose.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

agreed jdonn. i was trying to say GIBBO bid is ok. Sorry if I didn't make it clear. bid may not be "safe" but it is ok. no fix necessary.
