Assume you win a contest and get to play with Zia in the LM Pairs as an old friend of mine did years ago. For those of you overseas this is a multi session event at the ACBL National.
He faxes you his 100 page 2/1 system (short version); hehe no email in those days, so system is not an issue.
He asks you to fax back a one page note describing your Style, so you fax back?

A High "C" would be nice, but a flat "B" wouldn't get crumpled up in the fax machine.

1. Aggressive, but not reckless.
2. Random preempts with passed pard.
3. Enjoy 5 card weak 2s.
4. I DON'T PLAY GERBER OR FLANNERY. k thx.

Actually I would summarize the first three pages in the system script with my regular partner. This handles style.

It says that we open approx. rule of 20 1st 2nd vuln, a bit lighter not vuln.

Upgrades and downgrades are frequent.

In 3rd seat we open when we feel like it.

Prefer to open 1x or Namyats before using 2 strong.

Preempts: 3-level preempts vuln. promise 7 and two of the top 3. Not vuln. can be a good 6-bagger. Limits to weak two bids similar. If partner preempts 3rd seat NV responder should bid one level lower than he would in 1st seat.

Overcalls: Vulnerable a good suit or strong in values (14 HCP or so).

If I get to play with Zia I would even play "F" and "G" convention if he wants to.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do!

I will bid whatever I want and he is good enough to figure it out. :P

Openings: If balanced, fairly sound. Pass most balanced 11s, a few balanced 12s. If unbalanced fairly agressive. Open most 11s, some 10s if unbal. Opening NTs are pretty fequently upgraded, rarely downgraded.

Overcalls: At the 1 level, very light, sometimes 4 card suit. Can be lead directional or just some distributional hand that I feel like bidding on. At the 2 level fairly sound.

Preempts: weak 2s rarely 5 card suits. Agressive style with "pure" hands, suit quality not much of an issue if the spot cards are good. Will pass hands that dont "look" preemptive. If partner is a passed hand can be very weak or very strong.

3rd seat: Super light openings in third seat, 1M is often a 4 card suit.

Competitive bidding: At matchpoints very agressive. Balance and prebalance with very risky hands. Takeout Xs can be 4333 or have a doubleton in a side minor e.g. 4225 1H ?. Preemptive raises of partners overcalls can be tactical if they make a 2/1. Interfere agressively over their 1N openers.

Cardplay: Primary signal attitude. Rarely give count, only if partner needs it. Frequent suit preference signalling throughout the hand with spot cards.

Overall: I am pretty much right between "blaster" and "scientist."

If the following is not part of Zia's notes:
  • Open all 12's, some 11's, a few 10's using Rule of 20/19
  • Tend to ignore honor location for all basic bidding (i.e. any 4-card is 4-card, any 5-card is 5-card, etc), except for hand strength re-evalution
  • 1-level overcall with any 5-card suit and any 8hcp
  • 2-level overcall more soundly, either good suit or good hand
  • open all strong 2-suiters at 1-level
  • weak 2's on any 6-carder within range
  • vul preempts more careful, non-vul preempts more careless
  • weak 2's don't care about 4-card major, outside aces, or void unless it makes the hand too strong
  • will upgrade/downgrade hands based on distribution, honors in long suits, extra 10s or 9s, wasted strength, aces and kings vs quacks
  • When stuck, Will fudge distribution before strength and minor suit length before major suit length
  • Frequently use Law of Total Tricks in competitive decisions
  • Will splinter with singleton Ace if hand has extra strength
  • I am intimidated when partner is world-class (uh oh)

1) Opening bids lite, all 11 hcp and shapely 10 hcp.
2) Responses very conservative, see point 1.
3) Support p with support.
4) Try and get my bids in early and then shut up.
5) Balance less than field, see point 4.
6) Vul overcalls closer to sound than lite.
7) preempt with hcp in my suits.
8) Given the option will show my shape or where my values before strength.
9) Bid games very aggressive.
10) Focus more on bidding best game than finding slams.
11) Bid fewer underpoint slams than field, so tend to make fewer slam tries that force to 5 level. See point 10.
12) Use law and anti-law in competitive situations.
13) "OS"= attitude trick one, suit pref trick 2 and later, count rare and only when p needs it.
14) Often play 5-3 major fits in nt with 2 balanced hands.
15) Open off shape 1nt often.
16) Seldom make takeout or balance x with a void compared to field.
17) REMEMBER TO COUNT THE HAND AND PLAN THE PLAY OR DEFENSE AT TRICK ONE.
18) I REALLY NEED TO KEEP THESE NOTES IN MIND. I GET IN MORE TROUBLE WHEN I FORGET THEM IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE.

Edit: Note to self, last nite in TG you forgot pts 11,16 AND 17.

My minimum would be slightly less. If that was my min I would say "sound" instead of fairly sound :P Most peoples min would be ALOT less.

That's funny. My min for a 2-level overcall is rather more.. let's say.. flexible

Yesterday I overcalled a NV 2 on

9xx
AKxxx
--
xxxxx

pass 1 2 ..?

That gave LHO a big problem, which he didn't manage to solve.
