Partner leads the ten of spades, and dummy plays low.

Another "fumble" by Wales against England. Plan the defence as they say.

On their methods, 1C is 2+ but 1S was unbalanced with 4 spades and 5+clubs. 1NT was 6-9. 2NT was INV. Others on request as they say.

What is their style? Did 1S promise 5 clubs? It would in my partnerships and that’s important in terms of placing cards

East could/should bail to 2C with a modest 2=4=4=3 and no high diamond.

But if they bid up the line, east has to worry that west could be 4=2=3=4, etc

Given that they play transfer responses, I’d guess that 1S shows shape….also that they don’t open 1C with 4=1=4=4.

If either of my assumptions are incorrect, I would rethink.

As it is, I win the spade Queen and switch to the heart 10. I need partner to hold K8xx or Q8xx…playing responder for Jx KJxx Kxxx Jxx

Yes, One Spade showed 4-5 in the Blacks. And my partner did as you did ...

Is partner more likely to hold
  • ♥K8 or ♥Q8, or
  • ♦K?

So I think there is a case for just playing ♦Q.

But actually I think we can play for both - cash ♥A and switch to diamonds if partner discourages?
