The news is today and was then reported by another important local broadcaster (Telenorba). Fortunately we have these excellences at team level in Italy (also at the Bari hospital - Polyclinic - for kidney operations) and it is advisable to publicize them also to make them known abroad.

RARE AND COMPLEX INTERVENTION CARRIED OUT AT IRCCS “S. DE BELLIS”

ONLY IN AUGUST 92 SURGICAL OPERATIONS FOR CANCER, 750 IN EIGHT MONTHS

A pancreatic tumor successfully removed from a liver transplant patient. The particularly complex subtotal pancreatectomy surgery was performed last Thursday 31 August at the National Institute of Gastroenterology “S. De Bellis” in Castellana Grotte by the team of Doctor Leonardo Vincenti, director of the department of surgical sciences. 69 years old, from Puglia, the patient had undergone a liver transplant in Modena 15 years ago where, during the last check-up, he had been found to have pancreatic cancer. It was the doctors from Modena themselves who indicated the Irccs "De Bellis" as a reference center suitable for dealing with this case. The two most prestigious US transplant institutions have published only 9 cases in the world of patients with liver transplants who then underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer and not all with favorable outcomes. In this case, 3/4 of the pancreas had to be removed to completely remove the tumor. The patient is still hospitalized for observation and is in good condition.

“It is – explains Dr. Vincenti – an operation of extraordinary technical difficulty as a liver transplant recipient has a completely distorted anatomy with the reconstruction of liver arteries and veins that pass inside the pancreas, therefore a millimeter of damage is enough for close the vessels that carry blood to the liver and the patient's life is compromised".

The surgical activity of the "De Bellis" did not stop even in August, on the contrary, to meet the needs of the patients, it continued at such a pace as to allow, in the single key month of the summer period characterized by holidays, as many as 92 operations for the removal of tumors including esophagus (2), colon (24), rectum (7), pancreas (9), liver (3), 4 gastrectomies, one resection of the main bile duct, 2 resections of the small intestine and 2 nephrectomies, always for malignancies. More than half of these procedures were performed with a minimally invasive approach. In the first 8 months of the year, about 750 operations were performed at the "De Bellis", almost all major surgery: record numbers for a national record. “All of this – underlines Dr. Vincenti – was possible thanks to the sacrifice, abnegation and contribution of all the components of the institute: surgical, anesthesiological, gastroenterology, radiology, pathological anatomy, analysis laboratory, nursing staff and the strategic management support.

At the Irccs De Bellis in Castellana the "impossible intervention" saves the life of a woman

The patient discovered in September that she had liver cancer. Other facilities had refused to operate it

An intervention between the very difficult and the impossible. So surgeon Leonardo Vincenti presented the operation to Stefania, who in September discovered that she had a tumor in the center of her liver. For her it is the only chance of survival. Three other excellent structures consulted in Lombardy, Veneto and Puglia refused to operate it. Her case is too complex. Eight hours of surgery conducted by a multidisciplinary team in which three-quarters of the liver are removed. Also making this possible is a 3 tesla MRI, from 2020 at De Bellis, which allows you to see the organ in detail that is impossible with other machines. What makes the difference is the empathy of the doctors, ready to operate on everyone, without the fear of legal implications.
The report features interviews with Leonardo Vincenti, director of surgical sciences at Irccs De Bellis Castellana Grotte, and Roberto di Paola, health director at Irccs De Bellis
