I hold:

xx
Txx
Kxx
KQJxx

Playing 2/1 at matchpoints, all white, after an opening pass by LHO, partner opens 1D. RHO passes and i bid 1NT. My LHO surprises with 2S now, which is doubled by partner and passed around to me. What is my bid? Thanks.

It depends on your understanding of what the X means.

Assuming double is showing some spade length and at least preponderance of values for our side, so 15+ HCP. Also, is this agreement a decent one? If not what would it mean in your system?

X would be takeout for us.

Also a lot of the hands that fit your description would be opened 1N not 1 if you play 15-17.

I'll go for 3 although I'd want to see how many 8/9s I have

Thanks to both of you who clarified. The actual hand had plenty of 8s and 9s. I wanted to know what to bid even if there are dueces and treys. The hand was: 97, T87, K92, KQJ87.

Double would be penalty for us. The reason is that the partner of the doubler has bid NT so it is pointless to ask him to choose a suit. Therefore, I pass.

He's bid NT, but doesn't necessarily hold a balanced hand, so it's far from certain that it's pointless.

Doesn't a 1NT response over 1 of a minor opening promise a balanced hand?

In my agreement with my regular partner, under "when is a double penalty", there is a line saying that "After my partner has bid a natural NT" (note that the doubler bidding NT may still be takeout, suggesting 4432).

In this case, is a 1NT response to a 1-level opening natural?

For me 1N says I have a bid, but nothing else makes sense in whatever system I play.

Playing my Esoteric Unbalanced it specifically means I've got 4/5.

Some pairs have an agreement to not make a weak-2 opening bid holding a 4-card major as a side suit e.g. KQ10864 Q872 32 2.

Such a hand might justify East's "delayed weak 2" type action. Absent that, it looks like East is taking a very risky action.

What do you do with a 2209 5 count ? If the answer is 3, many play this as some sort of raise.

Could be 5 cards not quite good enough to open

It would be takeout for me too. Probably 1453/1354 and partner guesses we have a minor suit fit given the 1N bid. Shame if we have a weak 3325/3334 that wont make 3m

I was about to say the same, but less diplomatically (I was taught to avoid a weak 6-4M and obeyed for years with increasing doubt, when I finally gave up the ghost it was a liberation).

East was 6=4 in majors
