Not my table, but an "interesting" example of the "logic" of GIBBO bidding.

This hand VERY luckily turned out well for NS , thanks to the VERY favourable layout in spades and diamonds, but...how on Earth can North's 3NT (!) be a good call with his 6-0-3-4 hand...including a VOID in the suit his "partner" just showed?

As usual, the GIB definition of 3NT is pathetic, stupid, and useless: "1-4 clubs; 1-3 diamonds; 1-3 hearts; 6-7 spades; 10 HCP; partial stop in clubs; partial stop in diamonds". Besides being useless, it also makes no sense in that it says he can have up to FOUR clubs but only up to THREE diamonds. WHY, pray tell? What the HELL is the rationale for that ludicrous disparity?

Additionally, as is SO often the case with these GIBBO pieces of trash, North is not even adhering to his own GIB definition, as he does NOT have "10 HCP" - he has a mere EIGHT.

East-West robots - GIBBO robots who are invariably BAD bidders, but usually because they overbid - miss a cold game here that EITHER of them might well have bid. Charlie Rich had a song called "Everything I Do Is Wrong". It could well be the theme song of the disgustingly execrable GIBBO robots.

I would have been better off doubling 4S and collecting at least 500, but once I chose to bid 5H, West was kind and generous (and clueless!) enough to allow me an overtrick by leading a club rather than a spade.

TRULY hopeless play of a heart at trick six by the GIBBO doofus sitting West. In fairness, however, as stupid as he is, he is certainly not any more stupid than his fellow GIB and GIBBO brethren, as worthless a collection of total losers as anyone has ever seen.

South's 1NT rebid, as per the GIB definition, showed 12-14 HCP and at most three cards in any of the three non-club suits.

North has ONLY (or should that be "only" - ha, ha) 16 HCP, so he KNOWS that the partnership has at MOST a combined 30. He also has a STIFF club. So...

Why is the clueless jerk going down a long, winding road with his foolish 2H and 3S bids instead of simply leaping to 3NT over South's 1NT?

Answer: Well, the answer was actually IN the question, with the two words "clueless jerk". He went down the long, winding road precisely because he IS a clueless jerk - or, to use a synonym for "clueless jerk" : "GIBBO robot"!

During the - ahem - "defence" of the hand, West decides to shift to a club. Declarer WINS his club ace and IMMEDIATELY plays a second club. You know, I think that MIGHT be a clue that declarer is trying to establish tricks in...uh...wait a minute, let me see if I can figure this out...CLUBS! But that is obviously MUCH too difficult a calculation for the GIBBO doofus in the East, because said DOOFUS wins the trick and plays...yes, of COURSE you guessed it...another CLUB. Did these GIBBO halfwits suffer some tragedy that caused their "brains" to die...or were they simply "born" with no intelligence?

This is a MANDATED auction, so obviously GIBBO thinks that ALL bids by ALL four players are absolutely perfect.

I disagree. I realize that will be a shock to...precisely NO ONE.

First: Some humans will disagree with me, but I think North's double of 1C - with a 1-4-6-2 hand including a stiff king of spades is a bad choice.

Second: North's JUMP to 4H is ridiculous. Prior to this jump, he has already misbid and in my opinion overbid. His partner South has shown NOTHING other than at least 4 hearts and at least 4 spades. He could have ZERO HCP (despite the insane GIB definition of 2H). Surely at this point North should merely raise to THREE hearts. Since this CONTINUES to show a BIG hand, South will go on to 4H with ANY justification, so if a game exists it will not be missed anyway, but if NO game exists, North's VERY bad bidding will lead to an unnecessary minus or a BIGGER minus.

Third: South actually had a HUGE hand on the auction. His 1S and 2H calls were both quite conservative, so after North shows an absolute MONSTER (which, being a braindead piece of trash GIBBO robot he does NOT actually have), South's final PASS is actually EXTREMELY cowardly. Holding the South hand opposite a GOOD (read: HUMAN!) partner on the auction up to and including 4H, I would definitely bid on, expecting slam to be likely if North had a club control. In fact, as you can see, I made TWELVE tricks on the hand EVEN though hearts were 3-1 (meaning a guaranteed trump loser) and EVEN though North's hand was NOT as strong as his (horrid) bidding had indicated. GIBBO rots!

In addition to the repugnant auction RECOMMENDED (!) by GIBBO, the GIB definitions, as is SO often the case, are absolutely pathetic:

South's 2H claims that he shows: "2-9 total points". TWO to nine? Why not ZERO to nine? Wouldn't he bid the same way with hearts, spades, and ZERO points? AND, BTW, I consider his actual sequence to be underbidding on this auction.

For the REAL laugher, though (to show how the simpleminded GIBBO twit in the North TOTALLY ignores his own GIB definitions), look no further than the definition of North's imbecilic 4H: "4+ hearts; 22+ HCP; rebiddable diamonds; 23-28 total points". Count up North's ACTUAL points. Does he even come CLOSE to what his definition "promises"?

Another MANDATED auction...which, as you would expect, means another PATHETIC auction, because what GIBBO does best is: being PATHETIC at all aspects of bridge.

West has ALREADY shown his hand via his 3D mixed raise, but he feels it ESSENTIAL to show it AGAIN (while simultaneously slapping his "partner" East in the face) by bidding 4H.

North obviously LIKES West\s "strategy" because HE then uses exactly the same (boneheaded) "strategy"...by bidding HIS values AGAIN.

Dweeb, meet Dweeb.

Absolute JOKE of a lead. Something I would have expected from the truly disgusting GIB robots, who, as hard as it might be to be believe, were even WORSE leaders than the dismal GIBBO robots. Credit to Lorserker for the improvement in leads. Sadly, though, despite Lorserker's admirable work, the GIB robots were SO incredibly bad at all things involving bridge, that even the new and improved GIBBO robots still rot as "bridge players".

Even AFTER the immensely stupid lead, East-West can and should hold declarer to seven tricks. East wins the second diamond and shifts to a heart. All West has to do (!) is EITHER duck the first heart...OR win the first heart and fire back a LOW heart to retain communication with his partner East. INSTEAD, being that particularly useless and repulsive form of slime known as a GIBBO robot, the total imbecile wins the first heart, stupidly cashes a second heart, and then - with NO remaining entry (having removed them HIMSELF!) - plays a third heart, allowing declarer to (admittedly rudely) laugh in his ignorant GIBBO face and take NINE tricks.

Have I ever mentioned that GIBBO robots rot? Oh, I HAVE? Well, in that case, time to mention it AGAIN, because...GIBBO robots TOTALLY rot!

Normal spot, but another dismal MANDATED auction.

Also, although it was irrelevant on this random hand, why would West lead a heart from his weak four-bagger rather than a spade from his weak five-bagger? The obvious answer is that he "learned" HIS version of "bridge" on Bizarro World - where ALL GIBBO robots also did, and where logic is apparently BANNED!

MANDATED auction: South "merely" overcalls 1S rather than doubling East's 1D opening bid. Don't get me wrong: I think this is fine, and I too would "merely" overcall 1S.

Note, however, the TYPICALLY pathetic GIB definition of 1S, which is IGNORED by GIBBO itself (!) in this MANDATED AUCTION. We'll examine the piece of garbage slice by repulsive slice:

"One level overcall". Hey, Mr. GIB, guess what? You don't NEED to tell us that. It's useless , annoying, and insulting. Instead of wasting time and space on complete drivel like that, how about actually producing definitions that are complete, accurate, correct, honest, and actually FOLLOWED by the GIBBO robots?

"5+ spades". Not truthful! I have on many occasions seen the GIBBO robots overcall with "only" a four-bagger. I'm not criticizing those bids, because I make them too. I'm criticizing the incorrect, dishonest definition. Yes, HERE South DOES have five spades, but the definition is a GENERAL one and he does not ALWAYS have five, so the definition is a LIE.

"8-17 HCP". Stupid, because there are hands with fewer than 8 that still merit an overcall, and there are hands with more than 17 (including THIS one!) that merit "only" an overcall (and do NOT require an introductory double). Incorrect, as this VERY hand shows! Dishonest, ALSO as this VERY hand shows!

"9-19 total points". It's never anything but a complete waste of time to read what GIB definitions say about "total" points, because GIB has NO intelligent method for identifying them and based on countless GIB definitions that I have read does not even understand the basic concept.

The GIB definitions are SO consistently and irreparably bad that even GIBBO ITSELF ignores them in its OWN mandated and recommended auctions!

Another absolutely hopeless mandated auction that GIBBO obviously thinks is PERFECT bidding by all four players. For various reasons, the following bids are ALL imbecilic: 3D, 3H, 4C, 4H, and 5D. That's FIVE I.D.I.O.T.I.C. calls in a SINGLE auction! Even by the horrendous "standards" (ha, ha, HA!) of GIBBO, that is amazing. I won't waste your time or mine explaining why each of those calls is ridiculous. Instead, I'll post what happened at another table, not mine. Why? Because I want to EXPOSE the horrendous "defence" that was COMMITTED at that table by the ALWAYS atrocious GIBBO robots.

After West's lead of the spade ace and subsequent continuation of a spade, the hand is open and shut for two down, no matter how declarer plays. At the table I'm showing below, however, EW beat the contract only ONE trick when the stupid and COWARDLY GIBBO robot sitting West showed his massive and undeniable incompetence with the amazingly witless play of popping (!) his diamond queen on the second round of the suit, thereby crashing his "partner" East's king and compressing their two NATURAL (at that point, after that sequence of plays) trump tricks into one.

BUT...there is an old saying that God in His mercy protects drunks and I.D.I.O.T.S., and that indeed occurred here, because EVEN after West's breathtakingly boneheaded and self-destructive play of the diamond queen, the contract was STILL headed for down two! All East had to do was give West his OBVIOUS spade ruff. He could do it IMMEDIATELY...or he could EVEN cash a heart first and THEN give West the ruff. But what happened? The LUMMOX in the East proved that he is at LEAST as stupid as his "partner", because he cashed his heart king (okay, STILL safe, as long as he next plays a spade) and then...LOOKING AT WHAT WAS NOW A HEART VOID IN DUMMY (!)...played...a second heart! Declarer thanked East-West profusely for their OVERWHELMING "generosity" and went down ONLY one!

This is post #1371 of this essential thread that Diana so wisely created. Almost all of these 1371 (!) posts have EXPOSED the constant, unrelenting, unforgivable stupidity of the GIBBO robots, their system, and their definitions. Many of these posts have insulted all three...but all three are WELL deserving of many more, and many STRONGER insults than have been written. It would be impossible to EVER say ENOUGH bad things about the GIB/GIBBO robots, system, and definitions, because they are all unutterably wretched. Please DISCARD them and replace them with robots, a system, and definitions that at least APPROACH a basic level of ability.

The hand linked here was sent to me by a fellow BBO member who also plays robot games. He gave me permission to post it and he wrote "My Ox does not have his 3NT bid per definition."

Quite true, since the GIB definition of 3NT states that it shows "14-21 HCP", and "Ox" in the North has a mere...NINE (!)...a full FIVE (!) fewer than the MINIMUM he "promised" and an incredible TWELVE (!) fewer than his potential maximum. Talk about not even being in the ballpark!

While we're at it, let's amuse (?) ourselves by looking at a couple of the other TYPICALLY (sigh!) pathetic GIB definitions. A garbologist could make a LIFETIME career out of sifting through the massive stinking body of trash represented by GIB definitions.

The definition of 1D begins with the three needless, useless, insulting, and tremendously annoying words "Minor suit opening". Do you REALLY think you need to tell your players (including many who are paying customers) that 1D is a minor suit opening, Mr. GIB? Do you REALLY think that they are SO stupid that they won't realize it unless you tell them? And even if you DO think that, why, pray tell, is it of ANY USE WHATSOEVER for them to NOW be aware that 1D is, in fact, a minor suit opening? How will that newfound (ha, ha!) knowledge affect the bidding or play of the hand in ANY way?

The definition of 3C is not as INSULTING, but it's even more laughable: "4+ clubs; 4+ diamonds; 11-21 HCP; 3- card diamonds; 12-22 total points". I could criticize several things here, but I'll limit myself to the key - and MOST laughably inconsistent and illogical part: The execrable joke of a definition states early on that it shows "4+ diamonds". Wow, congratulations, Mr. GIB: You actually got that correct! Bravo! I'm impressed! But then...shortly thereafter...in the SAME definition, it says "3- card diamonds". Not only is that second statement clearly, patently, and completely 100 % WRONG with a capital "W", but it is also in direct contrast to the earlier statement about diamond length. GIB cannot even manage to be consistent within the body of one single, tiny definition. GIB and GIBBO are disgraces to bridge. They bring shame and humiliation to the game. They rot. They completely rot.

Just in case I have been less than clear in expressing my opinions of the GIB/GIBBO robots, system, and definitions, I will attempt to be specific here. They absolutely disgust me. They are the lowest of the low and the worst of the worst. They rot. They are an embarrassment to the game of bridge, and if they were humans they would be an embarrassment to the entire species. They are indefensible. The sooner they are forever gone, the better it will be for BBO, its users and customers, and the game of bridge. You might even say that I have no respect for them or that I have nothing but utter contempt for them. If you were to express that thought, you would be quite correct.

I hope that I have managed to clarify my opinion about this scourge that has infected bridge.

This board was played 96 times, always with (the human) South declaring 4S. 89 of those times, including at my table, NS took 11 tricks. At the other 7 tables, NS inexplicably took only 7 tricks.

I say "inexplicably" because it was a mandated auction and mandated lead, after which ALL declarers had an easy ELEVEN tricks, so I can only assume that at the 7 tables where only 10 were taken, either "a cow flew by" or there was a misclick. I am not bashing any humans, because bashing humans is not the purpose of this essential thread. I am only setting the stage for the issue that is the point of this post.

That issue is the GIB definition of South's 3S: "5+ spades; 17- HCP; 12-19 total points".

As is sadly SO often the case with GIB definitions, this is largely useless. The tremendously annoying GIB definition of South's earlier ONE spade overcall was - and we'll do this piece by nauseating piece:

"One level overcall". Good GRIEF, GIB! Enough is enough! Why must we so often see totally useless, unnecessary, INSULTING garbage like this? You know what, GIB? I'm willing to bet that EVERYONE already KNEW it was a "one level overcall" even before reading this pathetic GIB definition.

"5+ spades". That is indeed true...for THIS hand. On THIS hand South actually happens to have six spades. And yes, usually when South overcalls, he will have five or more spades...but NOT always, because I have seen the GIBBO robots overcall with "only" a four-bagger on multiple occasions. Thus, although the definition is true for THIS hand, it is not ALWAYS true, which means that: it is inaccurate, misleading, and perhaps dishonest as a general definition. A PROPER definition (as opposed to a PATHETIC GIB one) would be either "4+ spades" or "Usually 5+ spades, but could sometimes be only 4". It's LONG past the time for the pathetic GIB definitions to be HUGELY improved. This is but one example of many!

"8-17 HCP". I personally disagree, but I can live with this.

"9-19 total points". ANY time GIB refers to "total" points, the best thing to do is just IGNORE it, because GIB has shown on countless occasions that it has no scientific basis for the way it MAGICALLY arrives at the so-called "total" points it cavalierly spews out, and in fact GIB has demonstrated on numerous occasions that it doesn't even understand the basic concept.

Now, if you compare the definitions of 1S and 3S, you will see that both indicate "5+ spades", so there is no new info there.

For HCP, the situation is laughable and hopeless, even by the PATHETIC "standards" of GIB definitions. Why? Because the definition of ONE spade claimed that it showed "8-17 HCP", yet the definition of the free THREE spade call, two levels HIGHER, stated that it showed "17- HCP", which literally means ZERO to 17. Talk about inconsistent, sloppy, and lazy! So when South bid ONE spade, according to GIB he had at least 8 HCP...but when he freely bid THREE spades, he might have had ZERO HCP! What the HELL kind of utter NONSENSE is this?

Also, let's look at the ALWAYS worthless mentions of "total" points. When South bid ONE spade, GIB claimed (for absolutely NO reason, as usual) that he had "12-19 total points", yet when he freely bid THREE spades (two levels HIGHER, GIB now said...inconsistently and ridiculously that he had "9-19 total points". So GIB apparently thinks that for his 1S overcall he needs at least TWELVE total points...but for THREE spades he needs only nine. What INCREDIBLE stupidity and sloppiness! No wonder the GIB and GIBBO robots are such strikingly hideous "bridge players", given that they're saddled with a JOKE of a system and some of the worst definitions in the history of the human species.

But the actual KEY issue is this: What the HELL is the MESSAGE that 3S is trying to convey? Depending on partnership agreement, there are two reasonable possibilities. The first (and I would suspect the one most used by expert players) is that 3S is merely competitive and is NOT asking partner to bid on or even to CONTEMPLATE bidding on. The second is that 3S is inviting partner to bid 4S. A decent partnership will have an AGREEMENT about which of those two possibilities (or any other that they might choose) is what the bid means. Without an agreement, how can North possibly know what South wants him to do, and how can he therefore make a wise decision?

The typically USELESS GIB definition of 3S does not even bother answering the simple, basic, easy, ESSENTIAL question of what 3S is asking North to do...or, phrased another way, what 3S is saying. In other words, the GIB definition is a piece of completely useless GARBAGE that does not explain the one and only key issue that NEEDS to be explained!

MANDATED auction, so GIBBO obviously RECOMMENDS this and equally obviously feels that the bidding of all four players is PERFECT.

We are SO helpfully informed by the GIB definition of 1D that it is a "Minor suit opening". Wow, GREAT work, GIB! I bet no one would EVER have figured that out without your HUGELY necessary explanation!

Okay, time to remove tongue from cheek and get to the actual point of this post, which is the definition of South's 3H bid, a definition BY GIB...and a bid MANDATED BY (and therefore RECOMMENDED BY) GIBBO.

The definition: "Aggressive weak jump overcall; 7+ hearts; 10- HCP; 3+ total points".

The HAND: 75, KQ109842, AQJ2, VOID!!!!!!!!!

"Aggressive"???!!! A 3H "weak jump overcall" with THAT hand is "aggressive"???!!!

"10- HCP"???!!! He has TWELVE...QUALITY HCP! He has two more than his defined MAXIMUM and TWELVE more than his defined minimum (since 10- literally means ZERO to ten).

"3+ total points". Yeah, I guess it's three PLUS...since his hand is probably worth about SEVENTEEN "total" points!

Now it's GIBBO's system, so it has the right to play whatever system it wants, no matter HOW stupid and unworkable the system is, but it should at least FOLLOW its OWN system and its OWN definitions, yet this MANDATED auction is clear and irrefutable proof that GIBBO cannot even do THAT!

I could have played this one better, but luckily this thread is not about bashing ME.

I'm posting this hand to show the RIDICULOUS, UNDISCIPLINED, ANTI-SYSTEMIC bidding in the MANDATED AUCTION provided by GIBBO. GIBBO obviously RECOMMENDS the bidding of all four players and believes that the auction is PERFECT.

East passes. South has AQ, Q6, K97543, AJ10. I think that MANY players would open this 1NT. For sure I would. GIBBO, however, opens it a traditional and "normal" 1D, which is certainly fine and which I cannot at all criticize. (A RARITY that I can't criticize a GIBBO action!)

West passes. North bids 1H. East passes.

It's South's turn again. He bids...ONE NO TRUMP! This is reasonably and normally defined as showing "12-14 HCP"...but...but...BUT: He has...SIXTEEN (!!!) HCP!

Come ON, GIBBO! Wake up and smell the roses...all SIXTEEN of them!

BTW, I think this shows WHY a 1NT opening bid would have been a wise choice!

Note that looking ONLY at the NS hands, you would certainly want to be in 3NT with a combined total of 26 (!) HCP, every suit at least double stopped, and a good trick source in diamonds. The fact that I only took eight tricks and that it was an unfriendly layout (which often seems to be the case on BBO) with diamonds 4-1 and with AK97 of hearts behind dummy's J1082 does NOT alter the fact that the normal NS contract would be 3NT and that you would WANT, looking only at the NS hands, to be there. It also does not alter the fact that GIBBO'S MANDATED 1NT rebid by South is ridiculous!

Another absolute JOKE of a MANDATED auction, as GIBBO again proves that it has no idea how to bid and can't even adhere to its own GIB definitions.

South's 3C bid is insane, especially since it's red against white. Among its COUNTLESS flaws, GIBBO pays no attention to vulnerability. GIBBO stinks at anything and everything about bridge.

3C is defined as "11- HCP; twice rebiddable clubs; 10-12 total points".

His HAND is 96, A102, 1062, Q8742. Do YOU see anything even remotely resembling "10-12 total points"? Neither do I. Do YOU consider a moth-eaten mere five-bagger of Q8742 to be "rebiddable"? Neither do I.

Careless, undisciplined, foolish 3D bid by West, red against white, repeating the same values already shown by his earlier 2D bid. The ignorant loser got what he deserved. So he had 6 diamonds - wowie zowie, who cares? After the AK, the rest of his suit was as woeful as it could be - with the 5432, and his hand (given that he had 6 diamonds) was as FLAT as it could be with its 2-3-6-2 shape. These GIBBO bozos are absolutely clueless.

Trick one: Although it (luckily) didn't cost, why is North leading the suit East opened? Why do these jerks LOVE leading enemy suits?

Trick four: Although declarer PROBABLY would have inserted dummy's queen anyway, meaning that North's popping the king PROBABLY didn't cost, why is he DOING it? How can it ever gain? It CAN cost, if West (for whatever reason) would NOT have inserted the queen, so it seems that it was a typical zero percent play by the GIBBO robot in the North.
