Jeff Rubens argued that 1NT should be values for a jump response but no 5-card suit or good 4-card. I am convinced.
By the way, West didn't underbid, they UNDERbid.

Ok, I can loosen up even more on my 1nt bids, but probably not with this shape.
It's funny, 1nt started out as my least favorite bid or contract to play in.
Now it has become one of my favorite opening bids and contracts to play.
I went looking for the AED after the 2C bid.

Shape is a consideration. With a 4cM you show it. With a 5c♦ pass is more attractive, though you may wish to allow for exceptions here. With a 6c♣ you show it, and with a 5c♣ you may show it. Putting that together, the bid shows one of:
If you show 5 clubs ahead of a diamond stop always, which is also very reasonable, then 1NT shows '3=3=4=4 minus a card' or the 5c♦ exception hands.
- 3=3=(43)
- (23)=4=4
- x=y=4=5, no 4cM
- (23)=3=5, prefers to show the diamond values over the clubs (these might not exist)
- 5c♦ exception hands that don't want to pass (these might not exist)
