This hand occurred in a recent club session (a pleasing overall score of 76.25% with this partner), but the bidding on this following hand felt far from scientific.

Perhaps an easy start for most of us?

No multis at this club yet. Still trying to persuade this partner to play as both Majors with strong options.

I will experiment with pass, due to flatness and unfavorable vulnerability.. conservative

Congratulations on a truly great score, well done

There was a mixture of 2 & Pass bids, with the passers requiring 2/3 top honours at this vulnerability rather than 3/5. (Disciplined only at the club, apart from our partnership)

After a Pass there is the obvious 1 bid and I'll turn to East's call later.

But now your call over 2?

Pass. (If i Have to open for some reason it'll be 3, a weak two direct or via multi should be more constructive then this.)

Strong options are, imo, a bad idea.

One advantage of multi is that responder can drive to game with values…bidding to make…or with a weak hand with shape and both majors.

2D (P) 4D (bid your major) can cause real problems for 4th seat. Is responder bidding to make or to preempt? Does partner hold a blizzard or a hand almost good enough to act over 2D?

If 2D can include a strong option, responder has to cater to that.

This applies equally to other meanings for 2D…if 2D could be weak or strong, responder is going to be handcuffed.

I have played multi with a strong option. Hated it. And the strong option rarely arises and can usually be dealt with in some other fashion.

My preferred strong options are 2N 25-27 & primary not xx55 so minimising probability.
I'm not even sure my simulations have come up with the raise to 4M scenario with a corresponding strong hand
