While I'm not an expert and only use BBO to practice, I've noticed from a bidding standpoint that robots used in play 4 or just play bridge don't have a clue. They bid as if they just started to learn the game

The robots used in these free games are the Basic robots. You have to pay for Advanced robots to get improved bidding and play.
That said, when we've tested our robots, even the basic robots do well, consistently scoring above average. There are some quirks in robot bidding, but saying that they bid like beginners is a bit extreme. The problems mostly appear in complex auctions, especially competitive auctions.
