Sorry, I was informed by my pd that this was matchpoints, if it makes any difference...

If partner is suddenly making a game try (which way to the
partnership desk) then my

pass

is going to look worse than stupid. If p is offering an
alternative to play I think 3d may be our last chance to
play this hand undoubled making or (probably not). I have
less than zero desire to bid game with this collection and
pass here caters to those situations where p felt "compelled"
to raise our hearts with honor x. Opps are bidding an awful
lot with less than half the deck and missing the club QJ so
hearts are probably breaking badly.

3 shows a hand that wants to compete with three hearts and typically five diamonds.

We're known to have a heart fit, but our diamond-fit may well be only 5-2. Hence I bid 3. That may not be making, but it hasn't been doubled yet and we're non-vulnerable.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

With poor hearts and the QJ doubleton of clubs, even thinking about 4♥ is an overbid.
