1H. If pd bids 1S I will bid 2H, if 1NT I will bid 3H.

I think we had another topic similar to this in the past. On that topic double jump in a major suit over take out double by pd was asked.
It is pretty common among players to play it as;
a-preemptive
b-invitational with 5 cards
I like preemptive and kinda like a picture bid, 6 card suit very weak hand. So I would bid 3♥ with this.
I would not do it with a pick up pd though.

I might agree with the WJS idea but, since there is a pretty
good chance the hearts are not splitting favorably, I would
prefer a bit more internal solidity to my suit to make that
bid. Here it seems the safer bet is a nice simple
1H
which maintains a great deal of flexibility and if we can later
compete to show our length p will know we have a somewhat porous
suit since we failed to do a WJS right away.

In my regular partnerships, 2♥ would be fit showing (even over a 1♣ opening)
Something like
♠ 873
♥ AQT92
♦ 7
♣ KJT3
would be prototypical
This forces me to bid 1♥ with this hand.
(Even if I wasn't playing fit jumps I'd still bid 1♥)

Richard, pd did not open 1♣, he doubled.

I am one of those who play the 3!H bid as weak with 6 hearts. I see it described as preemptive, but I don't think of it that way: I think of it as descriptive, since I am expecting a fit and I am really helping partner to count winners. If he has, for example, AKx in hearts, he can expect 6 winners in trump and looks to see if his hand offers a play for 4 more, without expecting any help from me.
This hand is close, but I would prefer to bid 1♥, I think because of my spade holding, altho this is more a 'gut' reaction than a reasoned one.
Were partner to rebid 1N, I would bid 4♥. We would have at least 23 hcp, and the great bulk of the cards are sitting over the defensive strength, and just inviting game seems too weak.
Over 1♠, I invite via 3♥.

This was East's hand
so after 1♥ he'll bid 1N (I can't imagine bidding 1♠) and I bid 4♥...which I think has decent play on the auction....how does it do?

how many hearts? why, the appropriate number of them, of course!
(1 or 2, according to your agreements)
