The Director was called to the table after play. The claim (agreed) was that the North player had made an extended pause before passing and the suggested logical alternative bid for South player was pass. Should an adjusted score of 3 Diamonds making 8 tricks (+100 to North - South) be awarded?

Club Bridge, English Bridge Union.

Other tables scores for N-S

2 x 650 4S+1 by S
3 x 620 4S= by S
2 x 170 3S+1 by S
[1 x 170 2S+2 by S]
1 x 200 5D-2 by W

Two independent players think the 3S bid is clear-cut. Only E and W at the table thought Pass a logical alternative.

I would suggest East is mistaken about the merits of a pass.

How extended was the pause? That needs quantifying too? When I used to play regularly after a 3 opening bid one had to count to ten before even contemplating a bid. There's absolute no 'logic' insisting South needs to pass. If East had raised pre-emptively to 4 after North's powernap, and then South bid 4, there is at least some validation for the director to be called.

As it stands, in my personal opinion, it is just a case of sour grapes for East-West. (And if you were East/West I am just being candidly honest with you.)

If south was taking advantage of the pause their bid is 4.
Is a clear 3 only a corpse passes.

Well, it seems you can add the four posters above and myself to those two players who thought pass is not an LA to 3S. Result stands.

You have followed the recommended approach, to carry out a poll of players a similar standard ....

[But really???? This is such an obvious bid and nobody is going to think that pass is a Logical Alternative.]

Two independent players think the 3S bid is clear-cut.

So the director has the easiest possible ruling - score stands.

Only E and W at the table thought Pass a logical alternative.

Were they to appeal, I would consider the appeal frivolous and without merit and they should lose their deposit.

this is classic if it hesitates shoot it type mentality

it doesn't matter if partner hesitated for half an hour ffs, we have the worlds most obvious 3s bid lol

as others have said RESULT STANDS

3 is automatic. A pass by South would be crazy.

Hamman tried it against me in the LM pairs and got walloped. The huddle here guaranteed that 3S would do better than Hamman did.

Thank you to all who posted their opinions. I'll try to have my ruling at the Club altered from giving an adjusted score of 3D -1 for E-W to the result at the table 4S making by S.
