What should W bid?

I would pass. If North reopens with a double I'll let them play it in whatever they bid. If North rebids 2♥ partner has a chance to bid or double, if not and it comes round to me, I might compete with a double.

What's your overcalling style ? If pretty sound and you need the earth to double then bid clubs, I'd bid 2♦, if you overcall on tramtickets and will double and then bid clubs on any 17, I might risk a pass.

I'd pass, my understanding is East would need a stonking maximum overcall for game to have a chance, which they are almost certainly not going to have.

You don't need a max from partner. Something like AJx in hearts and KQJxxx in clubs gives us hope in 3NT. Throw in the DJ so we have a second potential source of tricks and the contract is looking pretty good.

A 2C overcall should be a 6-card suit more often than not, so I would just raise clubs.

If we invite and partner bids 3NT, it might be a good contract but it's also possible that they are counting for us to have help in either hearts or clubs, or that they have a 5-card suit (or a 6-card suit with a bad split) and simply can't establish 9 tricks. There's also the risk that 3♣ is too high if partner has a minimum and the breaks are not friendly.

Would 2♦ be forcing, by the way? I think my second choice would be 2♦ regardless of whether it is forcing or not, but of course a non-forcing 2♦ bid could easily lead to the wrong partscore.

Tough hand. Is it IMPs or matchpoints? I think at IMPs you might brave a 2♥ bid, probing for 3NT while leaving 3♣ open (although if partner does answer 2NT your 3♣ bid would be forcing, so it's not that safe to try this). Also you need partner to have a solid maximum for 3NT to have a chance (sfi's example hand is down on a heart lead if they hold up the ace of club once, I think), I'm somewhat worried by the fact that we have two small clubs instead of Tx or better. At matchpoints I'd take the plus and pass.

I simply meant it as a shorthand for "at matchpoints my partner will overcall more aggressively, potentially even with lead-direction as a primary goal. At IMPs 2♣, while NF, is in some sense not even 'to play' in that we primarily bid it with the goal of getting to sharp 3NT games. At matchpoints any call other than pass might land us in a contract that is likely to go down, trading +90 for -50 or worse. In particular this means we will lose to all the boards where NS bid to some 2-level contract (or even 1NT) and go down one, so this is potentially very costly. Bidding on is anti-percentage at matchpoints even if 3NT has good chances, and I don't even think it has particularly good chances."

It may allow you to do this, but require a hand big enough that plenty of hands that would make game will just overcall. What do you do with Void, Axx, xxx, AKQJxxx ? 3N is cold.

I recently posted a hand which was 7 solid clubs and AKx in a side suit, 3-0 in the others, void in the suit opened, on BW many more overcalled 2♣ rather than doubled (although a lot bid 3♥), if you simple overcall on this much, you need to bid.
