On the actual hand it didn't matter, but was unsure what the best lead was here.

Thanks,

Eagles.

The 2 seems automatic.

Partner appears to have 5 hearts a lot of the time (he certainly has 4) and a hand about as good as mine, 7 is very much in the frame

East is likely to hold clubs. A spade looks normal.

Hi,

The auction calls for a major.

Partner rates to have approx. the same strength than we have, he was not able
to introduce a 5 card heart suit on the 1 level, he may not have one due to having
passed, depends on their 2-level opening style, but red vs. green, 2nd seat.
I would go with a heart, the hope is, that I am hitting partners 5 card suit,
developing one more trick than we are able to develop in spades, but spade is ok.

With kind regards
Marlowe

Given our club length, East will quite often be 4333 with a 4 diamonds.

A lot of those hands might have overcalled 1 though. I think I'll pick a spade but I see no problem with a heart either.

I think the hand diagram is wrong, it was apparently me that had the chance to overcall 1 but if that was the case I'm not on lead. I suspect I'm south or the bids are the other way round. In that case for most people a heart overcall was possible, I would actually require more values than most so 5 card suit is very much in the frame.

East has either club length or diamonds and I see no reason to attack so I lead a top heart as it is unlikely to give anything away and partner has at least 4 of them.

Ok, I am South.
I am still going with hearts, but the arguments loose some weights, the 5 carder is still possible, and if it is empty, they may break 33,
and I am leading through the 4 card suit of opener, if he has a 4 carder.
