If it matters you are playing in the first round of a good field barometer game and West is a junior international.

3 diamonds. Playing against a junior international doesn't scare me as long as it isnt CLEE.

Cant keep my fingers away from the double card. If partner bids hearts, I'll convert to spades, showing spades and diamonds.
If I thought West was a sound bidder, I'd naturally bid 3♦.
Edit: Misread vulnerabilety. I'll go with the obvious 3♦.

I'll just pass, but don't totally hate 3♦.

3♦x-3.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

3♦. I want to double, but I can't handle 3 or 4!h from pard so I'll just bid ♦s.

3D. But the more I think about it, pass is good too.

3D...partner isn't busted (you're against a pass & a preempt) and the hand has good playing strength. Furthermore, partner isn't going to get carried away, because you didn't open a big club.

In the actual hand partner has Jxx AT9xxx xx xx and went crazy with a 4♠ bid over my 3♦ that I misplayed (or played for misdefense given bad contract) which was down 3. Most people were down one -100 our way (I think for 3♠-1) or -110 our way for there 3♣ making.
West had a strong hand, I'll see if I can find the hand record to post it.

close between 3D and pass. Im not really afraid of -200 since they wont double even if the 3C is fishy.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

(pass)-1♠*-(3♣)-pass
(pass)-?
1♠ is a limited (8+)10-15 point hand with 5+ ♠ (and at most 4♥)
